Lesson 2

Don’t say: “Did you went”

Do not say: “Did you went to the beach yesterday?”

“Did you went …?” is wrong (errado)
“Did you go …? is right (certo)

Say: “Did you go to the beach yesterday?”

Other examples:

Say: “Did you eat all the ice cream?”
(not: “Did you ate all the ice cream?”)

Say: “Did he have a drink?”
(not: “Did he had a drink?”)

Explicação:

“Did you go …?” is a question in the past.

The statement (afirmação) in the past is: “You went …”
(In a statement in the past, you put the verb in the past form – went is the past form of go)

To make a question, you use an auxiliary verb.
The auxiliary verb (verbo auxiliar) here is: do

And, when you use an auxiliary verb, the main, or original verb (in this example: go) is always in the base form (also called: the “infinitive”).
It is the auxiliary verb that changes.

For a question in the past, the auxiliary verb is in the past form, and the main verb is in the base form:
Did you go ….?
– Did is the past form of the auxiliary verb “do”
– go is the base form of the main verb “go”

Note: We also use auxiliary verbs in negatives:
Negative statement (in the past): You didn’t (did not) go.
Negative question: Didn’t you go? (not: Didn’t you went)
